1Password Review 2026
1Password is the gold standard in password management — not because it’s flashy, but because it has never had a meaningful security breach in its history. In a category where competitors have suffered high-profile incidents (Lastpass 2022), a clean record is the most important feature.
The product itself is exceptionally well-built: fast, reliable apps on every platform, thoughtful UX, and proactive security features that competitors have had to copy.
Security Architecture
1Password uses end-to-end encryption with AES-256. Your master password never leaves your device — 1Password’s servers only ever see an encrypted blob they cannot decrypt. The account is protected by a Secret Key (a 34-character key generated locally at setup) that must be combined with your master password to access your vault.
This two-factor key architecture means that even if 1Password’s servers were completely compromised, your data would be meaningless to attackers. This is the fundamental difference from tools that store password hashes server-side.
Travel Mode
Travel Mode is a 1Password-exclusive feature that lets you temporarily hide specific vaults when crossing international borders. You toggle it on before a border crossing — sensitive vaults become invisible and inaccessible on your device until you turn it off again from a trusted location.
For journalists, business travelers, and privacy-conscious users, this is a genuine differentiator.
Watchtower
Watchtower monitors your saved credentials against known breach databases in real time. When a site you use reports a breach, Watchtower flags the affected credentials and prompts you to update your password. It also identifies:
- Passwords that are weak or reused
- Sites that support two-factor authentication (and encourages enabling it)
- Accounts with outdated passwords
- Sites that have upgraded to passkey support
Cross-Platform Apps
1Password’s apps are the best in the category across every platform:
- Browser extension: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge — auto-fill is fast and accurate
- iOS and Android: Face ID/fingerprint unlock, auto-fill integration with iOS
- macOS: Native app with Touch ID, Safari integration
- Windows: Full-featured Windows app with Windows Hello support
- Linux: Officially supported — rare in the password manager category
- CLI: Developer-friendly command-line access to your vault
Pricing
- Individual ($2.99/mo): Unlimited passwords, 1GB document storage, Watchtower
- Families ($4.99/mo): Up to 5 family members, shared vaults, account recovery for family members
- Teams Starter ($19.95/mo flat): Up to 10 users — excellent value for small businesses
- Business ($7.99/user/mo): Admin console, policy enforcement, 5GB storage, 20 guest accounts
- Enterprise: Custom — SIEM integration, dedicated account manager
Verdict
1Password is the right password manager for anyone who takes security seriously. No free plan is a real limitation, but for $2.99/month, the peace of mind from a zero-breach track record and genuinely excellent apps is worth it.
