Review: Sony WF-1000XM5
Since the XM6 launched, the WF-1000XM5 dropped to $199 — making it one of the best value propositions in premium wireless earbuds. The XM5 platform delivers LDAC hi-res audio, strong ANC, and Sony’s characteristic warm sound profile at a $100 discount over its successor.
What You Get vs XM6
The XM5 uses Sony’s previous ANC platform — solid at approximately 80% noise reduction, but behind the XM6’s 88% and AirPods Pro 3’s 90%. In quiet offices and typical commuting, you won’t notice the difference. On noisy aircraft or loud construction areas, the XM6 pulls ahead noticeably.
Call quality is where the gap is most apparent: the XM5’s mic system lacks the AI training of the XM6, so background noise rejection on calls is adequate rather than exceptional.
Sound Quality
The 12mm driver in the XM5 delivers Sony’s warm, detailed sound signature — particularly strong bass extension for the driver size. LDAC support (990 kbps) enables hi-res audio from compatible Android devices and streaming services. For music quality at $199, it’s genuinely impressive.
Battery
8 hours with ANC enabled per charge, 24 hours total with the case. The quick charge feature (5 min = 1 hour) is maintained from the XM6 and is one of the most practical features in daily commuting use.
Verdict
The WF-1000XM5 at $199 is the recommendation for buyers who want premium sound quality and strong ANC without paying XM6 prices. Buy the XM6 if call quality and the absolute best ANC are priorities; save with the XM5 for excellent sound quality at a lower price.
