Review: Shark AI Ultra 2-in-1
Shark’s AI Ultra 2-in-1 makes a compelling case for the $599 robot vacuum segment by delivering LiDAR navigation, sonic mopping, and a self-empty dock at the same price as iRobot’s vacuum-only j7+. It’s not the most refined robot we’ve tested, but it covers a lot of ground for the price.
Cleaning & Mopping
The Matrix Clean navigation pattern overlaps cleaning passes to ensure full coverage — better than simpler S-pattern robots. The sonic mopping system creates actual scrubbing action (not just wiping), which shows on stubborn marks. In our tests, it cleared dried pasta sauce on tile with 3 passes — comparable to much more expensive systems.
The limitation: the mop doesn’t auto-lift for carpet transitions. You’ll need to manually define no-mop zones in the app for carpeted rooms — a one-time setup that works fine but requires 10 minutes of configuration.
Navigation
LiDAR-based mapping is accurate and reliable. First-run mapping took 8 minutes for a 1,200 sq ft apartment. Room labeling and custom zone cleaning work well. The app lacks some of the advanced features of Roborock (no 3D mapping, less granular zone control), but covers the essentials.
Verdict
The Shark AI Ultra is the best value vacuum-mop combo for mid-range budgets. If auto-lift mop functionality is important, upgrade to Roborock. For most hardwood-primary homes, Shark delivers excellent results at a fair price.
