Review: iRobot Roomba j7+
The Roomba j7+ occupies a specific position in 2026: it’s the robot vacuum with the best obstacle avoidance track record. iRobot’s PrecisionVision system uses AI-trained cameras to recognize and avoid pet waste, cables, and clutter — and they offer a “Pet Owner Official Promise” (P.O.O.P.) guarantee to repair or replace the robot if it ever makes contact with solid pet waste.
Cleaning Performance
iRobot uses relative “10x” suction specification rather than Pa ratings, making direct comparison difficult. In our tests, the j7+ handles standard home dirt, pet hair, and debris well on both hardwood and carpet. It falls short of the Roborock S8 on deep carpet pile extraction — but for most homes, the difference is minimal in daily use.
Obstacle Avoidance
This is where the j7+ genuinely excels. In our tests with cables, toys, and simulated pet waste, it avoided 95%+ of obstacles — significantly better than competing robots that rely on bump-detect rather than vision. For chaotic homes with kids or multiple pets, this reliability matters more than raw suction numbers.
Clean Base & Maintenance
The Clean Base holds 60 days of debris — one of the largest capacities available. The bags are proprietary (roughly $20 for 3-pack), which adds ongoing cost but is a fair trade for the convenience.
Verdict
The j7+ is the right robot for homes where obstacle avoidance is the priority — especially multi-pet households. If you want mopping as well, Roborock offers more features per dollar. But for vacuuming reliability, Roomba’s software maturity shows.
