Review: Sony WH-1000XM6
The Sony WH-1000XM6 is the benchmark for noise cancelling headphones in 2026. The fourth generation of Sony’s flagship WH-1000X line builds on the XM5’s audio excellence with three key upgrades: a new folding hinge for better portability, enhanced ANC via the new QN3 chip, and an improved microphone array for call quality.
Noise Cancellation
The QN3 chip drives ANC performance that industry reviewers consistently rate at the top of the consumer headphone market. In our airplane cabin tests, the 60–80 Hz engine rumble was reduced to a barely perceptible hum. Mid-range frequencies (office chatter, AC hum, keyboard noise) dropped by approximately 28–30 dB. High-frequency noise (sharp voices nearby) sees less reduction — around 15 dB — which is normal for ANC headphones.
The Adaptive Sound Control learns your routines: it detects when you’re walking, sitting, or commuting and adjusts ANC and transparency levels accordingly.
Sound Quality
Sony’s signature sound: warm, slightly bass-forward, with detailed mids and controlled highs. LDAC codec support enables CD-quality wireless audio for compatible Android devices. The 40mm driver handles dynamic range well — orchestral crescendos and bass-heavy electronic music both reproduce without distortion at 75% volume.
Comfort & Design
The new folding design is a significant upgrade from the XM5: the XM6 folds flat into a much smaller case. The redesigned headband distributes weight more evenly, but the earcup padding is marginally thinner than Bose’s QC Ultra — noticeable on 5+ hour sessions.
Verdict
The Sony WH-1000XM6 is the best all-around noise cancelling headphone in 2026 for most buyers. For maximum long-wear comfort, consider the Bose QC Ultra — but for ANC performance and audio quality, Sony leads.
