Wave Accounting Review 2026
Wave is the honest answer when someone asks “what free accounting software should I use?” While many products advertise “free” plans that quickly reveal meaningful limitations, Wave’s free accounting tier is genuinely functional: unlimited invoices, unlimited clients, real bank connections, and a proper double-entry accounting engine — all at no cost.
For solopreneurs, freelancers, and early-stage businesses not yet generating enough revenue to justify a paid accounting subscription, Wave is the default recommendation.
What’s Genuinely Free
Wave’s free tier includes:
- Accounting: Full double-entry bookkeeping, chart of accounts, journal entries
- Invoicing: Unlimited invoices with customizable templates, payment tracking, automated reminders
- Bank connections: Automatic transaction import from bank accounts and credit cards
- Receipt scanning: Mobile app (iOS + Android) for capturing and categorizing receipts
- Financial reports: P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, trial balance, aged receivables
This is not a “freemium trial” with a hard cutoff. Wave’s business model is based on payment processing fees and payroll subscriptions — the core accounting features remain free indefinitely.
Invoicing
Wave’s invoicing is strong for a free product. Every invoice includes:
- Custom branding (logo, colors, header)
- Due date and payment terms
- Automatic late payment reminders (3 configurable reminder triggers)
- Online payment link via Wave Payments or Stripe
- Invoice status tracking (sent, viewed, paid, overdue)
- Recurring invoices for repeat clients
The invoice interface is cleaner than QuickBooks’ and comparable to FreshBooks’.
Payment Processing
Wave Payments charges the standard credit card processing rate: 2.9% + $0.60 per transaction (or 3.4% + $0.60 for American Express). ACH bank transfers are 1% per transaction (minimum $1.00).
These are normal rates — comparable to Stripe, Square, and PayPal. Wave’s value proposition is that you get the invoicing and accounting for free, and only pay when you collect money.
Wave Pro
Wave Pro ($16/mo) adds:
- Automated transaction rules (recurring entries auto-categorized)
- Advanced reporting with comparison periods
- Priority customer support
- Additional dashboard views
For businesses that spend time on manual categorization each month, Wave Pro often pays for itself in time saved. Most users outgrow the free tier around 20–30 bank transactions per month.
Payroll
Wave Payroll is a paid add-on: $20/month + $6 per active employee. It handles full-service payroll for US employees with automatic tax filing. For businesses with their first 1–2 employees, it’s a reasonable entry point before evaluating Gusto or QuickBooks Payroll.
Limitations
Wave is not designed for businesses with:
- Inventory tracking (no inventory module exists)
- Time tracking (needs a third-party integration like Toggl or Harvest)
- Multi-currency (single-currency only)
- Multiple users with role-based permissions (Wave Pro adds basic accountant access)
These limitations are why Wave’s typical user is a solopreneur or 1–3 person service business. At the point where you need a bookkeeper, payroll, or inventory, the friction of working around Wave’s gaps typically drives an upgrade to QuickBooks or Xero.
Verdict
Wave is the best free accounting software available in 2026. No client limits, no invoice caps, proper double-entry accounting, and real bank sync — for free. If you’re not yet generating enough revenue to justify paying for accounting software, start with Wave.
